OPI – a rant

If you follow me and other beloved nail polish bloggers on Twitter you sure already have read about the OPI drama. If not: OPI apparently is threatening recommending etailers not to sell their products online and suing etailers that still do.
I am beyond disappointed in OPI and I just had to write the following rant off my chest:

Because of the OPI online sales drama I won’t show swatches of OPI nail polishes anymore from now on. I will continue wearing my OPI but it makes no sense to take pictures of the manicures anymore because: why showing you a product and create lemmings if the company doesn’t want you to buy it?

Why are online sales such a bad thing for you, OPI? Why are you threatening and suing etailers now? Without the etailers you will lose plenty of sales. A lot less nail polish lovers will have access to your products which resumes in a lot less nail polish lovers talking or writing about and recommending your products which will resume in even less sales.

You know about the power of increasing sales with bloggers, OPI. If you don’t you wouldn’t send out samples to nail polish bloggers in the first place, right?

The world of nail polish bloggers doesn’t know boundaries. Most nail polish bloggers – no matter which country they live in – blog in English so their posts are read from nail polish lovers all over the world. Especially international nail polish bloggers depend on etailers. Not only because the prices of your nail polishes are outrageous outside the US, OPI. Here in Germany one OPI nail polish retails for 16 EUR which is more than 21 USD. Seriously? Why does a nail polish retail for almost 140%* more than the US retail price of 9* USD in Germany?

I don’t want to start to rant about the ridiculously higher prices of makeup and nail polishes in countries outside of the US in general now because I probably could write a novel about this but why are prices of for example the German drugstore brand Essence a lot cheaper in the US even if the products are mostly made in the EU? A little bottle of an Essence nail polish retails for 1,25 EUR here but now for 0,99 USD in the US? Interesting. Makes me – once again – feel so much better as a European customer.

But back to you, OPI. 16 EUR a bottle? You are still serious about this? You are aware of that you are not Chanel, right? Good.

And now.. how can you explain the enormous difference in US and European prices? When I look at the US and European price differences of other brands like MAC for example they don’t charge 140%* more like you do. Their prices are higher here and I assume they are because of the import costs and higher taxes but at least they try to keep it reasonable (though they fail sometimes when I look at the $14/18 EUR prices for a lipstick).
How can you explain a $9*/$21 price difference, OPI? I am curious to know. Do you secretly add gold dust to nail polish bottles for the international market? Or unicorn pee? Because if not I can’t find any wise reason for this price difference.

Back to the joys of beeing an international nail polish enthusiast. I never.. ever would buy a bottle of OPI in Germany so if I can’t purchase your products online at etailers I have to stop buying your nail polishes, OPI. This makes me bitter but I am sure beloved brands like China Glaze, Color Club, Zoya, Nubar or Misa won’t mind if I spend more money on their polishes. What’s your loss is their gain, OPI.

Continue with your offensive international price policy and continue suing etailers. Have fun with it but don’t be too sad if you will regret it in the end because your sales decreased like they never have decreased before.

Sincerely,
a former OPI lover and now OPI boycotter

Update
Transdesign now is phasing out OPI. New on all OPI sub-pages:

OPI products liquidation.
We are liquidate our entire OPI inventory. While supplies last.

Fabulous. I am delighted. *sarcasm*

Update 2
Now also Head2Toe has removed OPI from their website. Thank you KrystalBall for letting us know!
I still can see OPI on 8ty8 but it is probably just a matter of time. :(

So.. OPI.. you continue to suck. :) *gallows humor*

Update 3
Carinae has a great update on her blog about the OPI drama which clears some things up.

While I can understand OPI better now and don’t endorse what OPI claims TD and other etailers have done I still think that without the need for:
1) OPI being available at etailers for US and international nail polish lovers
2) OPI being available at a reasonable price for everyone
the claimed copyright infringements and non-authorized sales wouldn’t have happened.

I can understand OPI wanting to control where and how their products are sold but I wish this now public drama will teach them that their current distribution and price policy failed.

Update 4
* I have changed the OPI retail price from $8 to $9 and with a US retail price of $9 the price difference between the US and Germany is that we pay 140% more instead of 170%.

GREAT article Jeanette, and I totally agree. What is ridiculious too is that OPI is made/manufractured in the NETHERLANDS. Why charge us Europeans so much when it’s made here?!

the-swatchaholic said on April 29th, 2010 at 10:08

Thank you Mika! <3 :)

Thank you as well, Suzanne! Wow.. I had no idea that OPI is made in the Netherlands. :o *shocked*

Nea/ Fashioned in Finland said on April 29th, 2010 at 10:27

The prices are so high here too (about 16€) and I won’t buy any more OPIs if that the price I have to pay. I want to have MANY colors from one collection ;D The price difference is so high compared to US, I rather buy other brands now.

OPI is made in Netherlands? :o :o :o

Great article.
I’m italian, and here a decent assortment of colour’s choice in nail polishes is like not just unicorn pee, but unicorn breathe: rarefied and uncatchable.

Blusherine said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:16

Very well written, right to the point! And I agree with you 100 percent!

PolishSis said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:19

I think OPI will regret this decision when the see how much customers they’ll lose. I won’t be buying their polish either if I have to pay €14 ( $18 ) for one bottle. They have a grat product, but it’s not THAT great.
Ill twitter your article.

Arrianne said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:26

This fucking sucks! I live in America, but if I cannot buy OPI for less than $5 (about $9 retail here, as you know) I will not buy it. Nice job OPI. You’re gonna be kicking yourselves in the ass so hard and are going to lose soooo much money. I’m not gonna repeat what you said already, but this makes me mad too. I like China Glaze better anyway.

Musicalhouses said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:38

I TOTALLY agree with everything you said. Seriously. If I can’t get OPI from etailers, I won’t buy OPI. Sorry. It’s not worth it – like you said, Nubar, China Glaze, Color Club, Diamond Cosmetics etc are all cheaper, and they aren’t any worse quality. It used to be alright if you ordered OPI and paid for international shipping – it still works out to a relatively decent price per bottle, but not any more.

And I TOTALLY agree that OPI is overpriced here. In the UK its 9.99GBP. Pay like 6 GBP more, and you can buy Chanel, which is 16GBP here. Heck, if I passed over Chanel because of the price because it wasn’t worth it, you can bet I’m definitely going to pass over 10GBP OPIs. (And the rest of Europe has it worse, I know!) And if you think European prices are bad, wait til you see how much it costs in Asia. One OPI in Singapore is almost 30SGD, which is like 20USD.

In short – nail polish is not a NEED, it’s a want. We don’t pay so much for something we merely WANT, even if it’s a strong lemming. And especially not when they have competitors who are just as good in quality and colour range, and cheaper in price.

D said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:44

Oh no!!! What is their problem?! They’re being so stupid.
Thanks for all this info I had no idea this was happening. :(

Therése - "nail-design" said on April 29th, 2010 at 11:48

Oh my where will all this end?! OPI hunting down e-tailers, US e-tailers that cannot send polish outside the US without charging alot for the “dangerous goods”…

Is it only US customers that will have pretty polishes from known brand from now on?!

I’m with you in the boycott!

Rhea said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:02

Oh, & that’s not all. Now the OPI distributers in other countries(at least mine)are acting all sucky too. I’ll rant about it very soon, I guess. If I can’t control myself,i.e. Argh, my blood is boiling…..

Rita said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:09

Hi everyone. I live in Portugal and I am starting my OPI collection. I have seven so far. I was very sad when I read this, because just as you said a bottle of OPI here costs almost 16€. Now in the US people make a lot more money than here, so imagine what a restricted range of the portuguese women can actually buy this polish if they go ahead with this. I am sure that OPI does not want their polishes used by an elite of people only, this in Europe, of course, because in the US almost everybody if not everybody can have them. Great article

PolishedSheep said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:18

Great post! For me OPI is no longer a choice – their price policy is just too absurd – I’ll stick with brands like China Glaze and Colour Club which seem to go better with my body-chemistry anyway!

Willa said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:34

Thank you for this post darling, I didnt know about that because I’m not very into OPI’s nail polishes since they are so expensive… Here in Canada, when you find one in a store, you have to expect to pay about 15$ a bottle. That is ridiculous when you think you can get them online for half of the price.

Well, no more OPI for me, and that’s sad because I just started acrylic nails and I bought the OPI absolute system. After that I will change for sure!

Suzanne said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:38

Yes, on OPI bottles it says ‘HELMOND, THE NETHERLANDS.’ :o

Elena said on April 29th, 2010 at 12:59

Their loss is other brands’ gain. I won’t be buying any more OPIs. Polish is a little luxury that I allow myself, but at those prices I’d rather not buy any. I can’t justify being that extravagant.

Tuli said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:00

You’re 100% right and I agree with every word. It seems to me like it’s kind of a test “how much would they be willing to pay” and I’m not paying 20$ for a bottle and let me tell you, I also won’t pay 12$ for a bottle on a regular basis.
There’s no doubt, these are sad news to me, and add it to the last news about TD and I really don’t know where am I going to get my polishes from, but although it’s my passion, my bank account is also my passion :-)

Natalia said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:09

YES! I think exactly like you.. where is to sign? I completely support your boycot starting NOW

Anneli said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:32

Well put! I agree with everything you wrote and OPI can forget about my business if they are going to keep on with their e-tailer witch hunt.

I sincerely hope other bloggers will follow your example and not show OPI swatches anymore, although I think some bloggers might continue with it just because they are afraid of getting on OPIs bad side and wont receive free polishes anymore – sad but true.

Millie said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:35

Couldn’t agree more with your post. OPI is $20 in Australia and before I discovered the online sellers I never owned one. If no-one sells it online for a reasonable price I won’t be buying any more. I am so angry about all this that I think I’ll be boycotting them too, even though other brands don’t seem to last as long on my nails.

laquermanic said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:58

I should spend more time on Twitter, abviously; I wasn’t aware of this and posted my upcoming swatches, which includes Shrek and Soft Shades. Now I’m a little bewildered.
It’s not that I can’t pay for my polishes (in Norway a bottle of OPI costs close to $27), but the availability. Shrek doesn’t even launch in Norway.

This is so outrageous, and it just turns off my blogging lust. Have to think this through, and maybe go onto other brands. All brands are difficult to access here in Norway, and my fear is that other brands will follow. OPI is originally a salon-product, maybe they want to make more exlusive? I don’t know, but I don’t like this at all.

Thanks for sharing. Just out of curiousity: Where did you learn about this?

Deniz said on April 29th, 2010 at 13:59

this e-tailer thing is getting ridiculous. transdesign stopped shipping via usps, essie pulled the prices up to $8, china glaze doesn’t ship internationally. now this. what’s happening?
I’m just thankful I have friends now in the USA, who help me get my hands on the polishes. Because otherwise, I couldn’t…
The OPI costs 21 EUR here aswell, plus they only have the old collections and boring colors. =/

Trina said on April 29th, 2010 at 14:14

What?! U’re joking, right? I get ALL my OPI’s from etailers!!! It’s so expensive and hard to get OPI in Singapore! I mean, u could get it from salons but they’re damn snotty when I tell them I don’t want a mani, just the OPI’s :( There are a few departmental stores, like Metro, that sell it, but it makes no sense to make me travel halfway across town just to get my OPI fix. Also, it’s SGD 21 to SGD 32 a bottle! crazy prices! etailers sell opi for less then SGD11 a bottle, international shipping included. OPI, U can’t do this to us! I swear I’ll switch to china glaze permanently if I have to pay TWICE the price for OPI. >:( *extremely irritated*

SilhouetteScreams said on April 29th, 2010 at 14:15

I apologise for swearing, but A-FUCKING-MEN. I live in Australia which probably gets the worst of all the international price hikes, so I feel your pain and then some :( I hope they dont sue ebayers, because now I feel like just buying a tonne of OPI from ebay to piss them off.

Emily said on April 29th, 2010 at 14:16

Is that why Victoria’s Nail Supply removed OPI from their site? This sucks… they had the best prices. That’s really unprofessional of them, and they will lose a ton of business.

I AGREE 100% THIS IS WRONG. AND THEY WILL LOOSE ALL THEIR CUSTOMERS. BUT I HAVE A QUESTION IS THIS HAPPENING TO ALL E-TAILORS OR JUST TRANSDESGIN?

maria said on April 29th, 2010 at 14:54

great article! i completely agree. i understand that prices internationally have to be slightly higher due to import costs and all that, but OPI has always been outrageous. i live in Asia and a bottle of OPI (retail) costs about US$23. i have never paid that for a bottle of OPI, and if e-tailers are forced to stop carrying OPI then there are plenty of other brands! awhile back OPI was THE name in nail polish for many people, but nowadays there are SO MANY fantastic brands, all available at e-tailers, like china glaze, color club, orly, misa, etc. what a stupid move by OPI by alienating their international consumers.

hontapocasgreen said on April 29th, 2010 at 15:19

You said everything I felt before even reading your post! while I understand OPI may feel that etailers selling to the general public at discount is “cheapening” their brand– because this is how I am seeing things— perhaps they need to rethink their pricing and marketing strategy. Nail polish blogging has been BIG business for them with about as much free publicity as you can get internationally. As an American, I don’t feel it is fair that they are charging way too much overseas even given import tax & other fees. I understand the retailer has to make their profit, too. But it’s even overpriced IMO here, too. But, how many trips do we consumers have to pay for so Suzi can continue to get her inspirations? I understand it’s hard economic times all around, but how dare OPI bite the hands that’s feeding them. BTW, great job on OPI’s price increase in the past couple of years. I’m sure that really had nothing to do with materials or production cost, but just the ability to do so because nail polish blogging got so popular to increase sales.

the-swatchaholic said on April 29th, 2010 at 15:49

Thank you all! <3 <3 :**

I have noticed too that rants are not always welcome in the world of blogging, Sasha. :( But sometimes… when something is really wrong we have the right to raise our voices.

As customers we have only one chance to tell companies that we don’t agree with their price strategy and/or distribution strategy: stop buying their products.
In addition to this bloggers and blog readers have a second option to show our disapproval: write about it and comment.

I agree that with the now huge amount of nail polish blogs with so many readers nail polish companies have a new and powerful tool to promote their products.
And also in contrast to magazines an even better tool because swatches on nails instead of just plain bottle pictures are more tempting because the customer can relate even more to the product.

But if a company like OPI plays the untouchable and unreachable diva.. fine. I don’t need to buy OPI nail polishes.. I used to choose to buy OPI nail polishes. However OPI needs us to buy their nail polishes. I wish they would keep that in mind.

Emily: Yes I think this is why VNS removed OPI from their site. :(

Megan said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:14

This is ridiculous. I can say honestly that if they remove OPI from e-tailers I will never own another bottle of it. I can’t afford to pay $8-9 a bottle (and I feel bad for you with your prices!) for a polish. It also isn’t available for sale anywhere near me, so no. I don’t find their polish to even be as nice as some of the other companies in the first place, the $5 price tag is even too much for me most of the time and now the greed? Well, I won’t be buying the Shrek collection like I planned.

Shayla said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:20

Wow, OPI, good job! You’re going to alienate *all* your international fans. I don’t have many OPI polishes as is, but I’ll definitely be buying less.

Ayuu said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:23

I didn’t know about that ! That’s a bad new, the prices in EU are totally crazy … I live in Belgium, I don’t even know if we have OPI here but I came to France to buy some at 16 – 18 € :(
If they are not sold online anymore, I won’t buy OPI for sure, I need to get fun from my nail passion and wear as much colors as possible !
Thanks for your article !

Sid said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:31

I agree with you! Thanks for the great article. I hope all the nail bloggers would post the same thing as you, so that OPI knows. And hopefully OPI will reconsider it! I keep supporting you. :)

PinkPüppi said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:46

This is so …ah…I couldn’t discribe what it is. I fell in love whith the Shrek collection an ordered them today. And now all was cancelled.

Transdesgin just say they don’t ship hazardous items via USPS. So it is also not possible to buy any CG or Essies there….

amusedPolish said on April 29th, 2010 at 16:55

I agree with you- Opi seems to be crazy about scaring us customers down with their actions. The austrian Opi association/rep forbid one Austrian e-tailer to sell opi polishes here in Austria. I only though “wtf?”.
They could even make more money when they allow more companies to sell their products, why forbid so many e-tailers to sell the polishes?

Laura said on April 29th, 2010 at 17:22

I was thinking about opening an online store, but for the OPIs I guess I’ll have to go by requests, and see if y wholesaler has what people are looking for if anyone would even think about purchasing from that crackpot company.

I mean really $27 in Norway?!?! This company is not like Chanel who is already pricey, and only makes a limited number of colors at a time. They are pumping out colors all the time!

I am so disappointed, and that says a lot.

Diana said on April 29th, 2010 at 17:31

I don’t get it either. I live in the Netherlands and it’s made here. And we have to pay around 14 euro’s for it.

Beauty addict said on April 29th, 2010 at 18:23

Wow, I didn’t know about this whole drama! I can’t believe! The only reason I have few OPI bottles is because they’re much cheaper on eBay. Here they cost exactly $20 which id way overpriced!

How did this drama even started in the first place?

Lady C. said on April 29th, 2010 at 19:05

….are you kidding me?! When did they decide to be this stupid?! I know OPI is a popular brand, but despite their popularity, can they afford to cut down their business in this manner?!

Melissa said on April 29th, 2010 at 19:31

Hi!

I’m new to reading your blog, but I can’t agree with you (and apparently everyone else) more! I live in the US (OPI = $8 USD) and I STILL look online to see if I can find it before I buy in-store. If my drugstores have a “rare” or popular color that’s usually sold out online, of course I’ll get it. Any other case, I buy from etailers.

Even before I found myself unemployed, I’ve always been one to do my own nails. As much as I would love a professional manicure, I can’t justify the cost because it’s one of those things I know I can do myself. Plus, my “nails” time doubles as my “me” time, which I value greatly the more mature I become.

I hate the fact that OPI wants etailers to stop carrying their products. My aunt, who served as my fashion-savvy role model as I was growing up, taught me how to really “do” my nails when I was about 10 (I’m 22, now). She always uses OPI, so I soon became their next poster-child. That’s 12 years of almost exclusive OPI use. And, whenever someone asks what the color is, I always give OPI a shameless plug (See, OPI? I’m HELPING you!).

When it comes down to it, the price markup is evident when etailers like 8ty8beauty can sell OPI for $4.48 a bottle (they’re obviously making something off that, so you KNOW they bought it direct for even less). I’m not going to pay $8 for something I can get for $4.50ish. And, now that I know that the wholesale price can’t possibly be CLOSE to $8…Well…I don’t like feeling ripped off, so if OPI stops being sold online, I likely won’t be buying any more, ever.

I’m fine with that, too. Other companies like Zoya and China Glaze have fabulous colors, great quality, and can be found for incredibly low prices online. In fact, the only thing that’s kept me buying OPI for so long is brand loyalty. So in this case, change isn’t a bad thing.

BTW, I’ve never lived overseas long enough to notice the HUGE price difference between the US and international market- holy crap! I feel bad for not wanting to pay $8 for something others are apparently shelling out WAY over twice as much for! I apologize to everyone overseas for complaining; I hope you don’t think less of me.

I’m sorry, OPI, but pressuring etailers to quit selling your products disgusts me. The WORLD economy right now is fragile at best- you should be more focused on keeping customers, not pushing us away. The company already has a solid reputation for selling luxury goods, there’s no need to further the exclusivity of your market.

The least you could do is send out complimentary ice packs to your loyal users, whom you are brutally slapping in the face by doing this.

Sorry for that long-winded rant. I love your blog! You rock!

Love and polish,

Melissa

Carinae L'etoile said on April 29th, 2010 at 19:48

I looked over the court documents filed – copyright infringement. Nothing else. So OPI didn’t like the pictures TD and VNS used because they were inherently OPI? That’s all I can get out of the docs.

There may be more to the drama – who knows?

As it stands I am fortunate enough to have nail suppliers here that sell me bottles of OPI for $4.00 or $5.00.

I know that for my friends in Europe, I do purchase bottles for them and they reimburse me for the polish and shipping.

I wish I could do that for everyone. :(

Rebecca said on April 29th, 2010 at 20:08

UNICORN PEE?!?! Ahahahahahha. Great post. I wasn’t aware of this drama. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Kirsten said on April 29th, 2010 at 20:24

Hear hear! I’ve been saying the exact same thing and I plan to make a blog post about this too.
I’m also planning to take down all my posts about OPI and I’m not even blogging about the ones I already own any more.

Sarah said on April 29th, 2010 at 20:40

Wow, that’s pretty fucked up of them. I work at a salon that sells OPI (along with China Glaze, Essie, a few others) and I’m always like “OPI = buy online, cheaper.” Now, screw that, guess this’ll definitely restrict my OPI purchases, sucks too though, they have some pretty awesome colors when they try. But damn, the price differences for Europe and here in the US, wow, that’s unacceptable.

the-swatchaholic said on April 29th, 2010 at 20:47

Thank you all! <3

Melissa I love your rant!

Carinae L’etoile you are so lucky! I hope it is ok that I am a tiny bit jealous right now. :D
I think there must be more, too. If only copyright infringement would be the matter VNS and TD just would have taken down whatever pictures were infringing.

Who knows if the copyright infringement suit is just a warning what could happen if the sued etailers don’t stop selling OPI online? But this is just speculative.

I am really sad about this whole new nail polish drama. Transdesign with their shipping increase due to shipping via UPS is no longer an option for me. If I ever have enough spare change to pay $160+ for the shipping of 19 bottles of nail polish I expect UPS to deliver my package by foot and with a bottle of Champagne.

Belle said on April 29th, 2010 at 21:54

I have been mostly a lurker here but just had to say my piece.

Though I have do access to polishes in the US, I am actually outside of the US for most of the year and rely on etailers to get my quick polish fix.

I could definitely buy retail plus around $2 per bottle of shipping since I know the fuel (for airplanes) does not come cheap and that bottles are really heavy.

But to go all out in copyright infringement and in the end discouraging sales of your product….I just don’t get it! Online is the way to go, brands! Online! Not the other way around!

Funny thing is even if I’d be willing to spend $17 for one polish in Czech republic, where do I live, in my city I found it only at local Sephora and they have like 5 shades :)
Screw you OPI…I really hate companies that refuse to offer same conditions to all international customers…it’s the same think with Hollister that outside US we cannot shop sale products. I head a few problems with them so I gave it up and started to find another customer-friendly brand. I guess maybe I’ll do the same with OPI especially when Chg, Orly and other polishes are amazing, too.

Katherine said on April 30th, 2010 at 00:43

I am so glad you posted this rant. I really surprises me for OPI to want to stop etailers from selling their products online. After I found on TD, 8ty8b & VNS, I haven’t gotten OPI for its regular $8 price because it’s outrageous. I recently found that both VNS and TD are selling Essie’s for $8 now rather than its $4. I don’t know the reason why but now I’m starting to believe that it’s similar to OPI and what they want. VNS states that they have special prices for professional and student technicans. OPI would not realize how much money they are going to lose if all the online bloggers began to stop buying OPI because they want etailers not to sell them anymore. I’m really disappointed because it means that I’m limited in resources to get different nail polishes. I rely on these etailers to get China Glaze, OPI, Essie and other brands. In my neighborhood, they do not sell China Glaze at all. And the nail supply I go to, I now found out that they’ve been faking their Essie’s because one of an online user who goes there saw them multiple times pouring nail polish into Essie bottles. I’m losing all hope for etailers and my hobby for nail polish :\

I’m with you on the OPI rant, but I have to jump in to defend Essence. The bottles I have from Germany are 8ml but the ones sold here in the US are 5ml, maybe this explains the difference.

Allison L said on April 30th, 2010 at 01:02

I can see how this could affect you a lot. The prices between products from the US and Europe is crazy. I spent last summer in Switzerland so I could visit my boyfriend and it hurt my eyes when I looked at the prices of things. It was really hard for me to purchase stuff I needed when I knew I could get it for half the price back home.

Wow, really? That is very sad. They’re going to lose a huge customer base, and for what? They are going to regret that decision.

Lina said on April 30th, 2010 at 08:05

Well I think OPI is just beeing ridicolus!
It pisses me off that they won’t let etailers sell there proucts and it pisses me off that trandesign was forced to change their USPS shipping to UPS.
I think I will stop showing OPI in my blog as well!

Elena said on April 30th, 2010 at 08:26

I am not cheap. But I am not stupid either. I cannot justify spending 15 euros on a bottle of OPI when I know that I am paying twice the normal asking price in the US. Etailers make it possible for me to have access to brands I can’t get here or find almost impossible to find. The china glazes I’ve found in my city are from collections that came out two or three years ago and they just carry a few colours. International shipping is a necessary evil, but I can live with that. I know my stash would be much bigger if I didn’t have to shell out 20 dollars every time I place an order. But OPI, are you kidding me? 15 euros for something that is made HERE in Europe? No thanks. I’m planning my first RBL haul. If I have to dish out some big money, I’ll go for the Holy Grail in nail polish. And there are other wonderful brands out there that have excellent customer service. Kim Snyder at Overall Beauty is incredible and the BB Couture polishes she carries are the bomb. There are more fish in the sea. I’ll just go fish in other waters.

coco b. said on April 30th, 2010 at 09:06

Totally agree. First with the Transdesign’s outraging increase in shipping fee and now with OPI’s unbelievable move we worldwide polish lovers will suffer. It seems so ugly to me that a major polish brand dismisses the power of the bloggers and global polish fans, to be able to keep their prices high and control distribution. Such an archaic action. Before they even think of starting an action like that they should have provided a solid distribution overseas with acceptable prices. (OPI retails for around 23 USD here in Turkey and a few lonely bottles can be found in dark, dusty shelves of Sephora. A great image boost for OPI!

As an influential polish blogger I would love you to send this letter to OPI so they know how we international customers feel. Maybe they would come to their senses.

the-swatchaholic said on April 30th, 2010 at 09:45

Thank you all for your great comments! <3

Kate: In Germany we have the little 5ml bottles too and they retail for 1,25 EUR. :(
But we do have bigger bottles (7, 8 and 10 ml) as well in the Essence perm line and their limited editions and they retail for 1,75 EUR.

coco b.: I will write OPI an email this weekend to tell them that they are about to not only lose sales but also to screw up their image as a brand.

In Italy, they’re €1,29 the small ones and €1,99 the bigger ones.
And some collections will not be released here (the “Crazy about color”, for example…)
Bah.

Poupoune said on April 30th, 2010 at 11:48

Hi there, Itotally agree with your post, and with everyone in the comments. In France OPI is sold at the price of 13-15€. I never bought a nail polish from OPI that price, and I will never. And there’s the fact that in stores (here it’s Sephora, and some nail suppliers who seel OPI), items of the limited collections are out of stock very fastly, with no back up.

And now, even for the other brands, Transdesign stops the use of the small flat rate box, which contains 9 nail polishes for 18$. Now it’s UPS and nothing else, so shipping + 40$ I think. One french girl on a forum told that for 5 NP, shipping was 35$ !!!

I don’t know what’s happening in the world of nail polish… but I’m not sure these brands will win the war against customers…

(Sorry for my english, it’s not very good when I’m pissed of lol)

Very well said!
I was aware of the drama and it had been bugging me for a few days but I didn’t know where to start, well, you’ve nailed it perfectly!
Too bad for OPI if they lose a big section of their regular customers, hell, I’m NEVER going to spend 16eur on an OPI when I can get a Chanel for 20 (which I never will as well)!
Essence, Catrice, Glam Nails…here I come :D

Carinae L'etoile said on May 1st, 2010 at 00:19

I did an update on the OPI drama on my blog – it seems that Trans Design did violate and break the law on several things.

I got a copy of the complaint that was filed by OPI against Trans Design, which you can find on my blog. I don’t want to clutter up the comments with long paragraphs.

This sucks so hard.
I’ve been wanting Merry Midnight from VNS, and now I can’t have it.
I hate you, OPI!!

I don’t know why they would even do this.
If they thought the etailers were hurting them now, we’ll see how bad they feel at their next quarterly financial meeting.
Nobody’s gonna pay 8.50 for a bajillion reds SUZI.

Productrater said on May 1st, 2010 at 06:47

This is the first that I am hearing about it and it seriously sucks because I’ve ordered a lot of OPI from this etailer.

the-swatchaholic said on May 1st, 2010 at 09:04

Thank you Carinae for your great blog post!

This really clears some things up. I must admit as a nail polish lover who buys a lot of nail polishes and so depends on a good and reasonable price I still wouldn’t stop buying OPI at etailers even after knowing this. The need for reasonable priced OPI nail polishes is there and because OPI couldn’t and didn’t wanted to fulfill this need etailers selling OPI became so big and successful.

I am really concerned from where I should get OPI polishes now because even if OPI would realise how much they need licensed etailers or an own online store – they surely wouldn’t ship international.
I refuse to pay German retail for a bottle of OPI because I think 16 EUR is ridiculous and almost nasty so it is also kind of OPI’s own fault with their mediocre distribution and outrageous international price policy that etailers made so much business with selling OPI online.

Lotta said on May 1st, 2010 at 09:48

Thank you for writing this! I agree 100% with you, I was definitely very shocked and sad to find out about OPI’s recent actions. I live in Finland where OPIs are usually 15EUR and I know I won’t be buying any of them at such prices. There are so many other brands that produce great colours at better prices, there’s just no need to support OPI.

Susana said on May 1st, 2010 at 09:49

Very good post.

I have always bought my OPIs from transdesign because I live in Spain and OPI is not distributed here. The etailers were my only way of getting those polishes, even if I were willing to pay a higher price to buy them from a store (which I’m not).

Good news for china Glaze, I guess… back to being my favorite brand!

I agree completely with your position here. Your blog is one of my favorites, and I won’t be missing OPI very much as long as you go on giving us insights of the many wonderful polishes in the world.

Copyright infringement/diversion protection my ass. They don’t want anyone undercutting their outrageous international pricing.

I fully applaud your boycott and hope many other bloggers follow suit.

Mademoiselle C. said on May 1st, 2010 at 11:47

I’m still angry as they still will sell their bottles at crazy prices in Europe.
The fact that they are made in Europe makes me even more mad !!
I said good bye to OPI, that was for good.

Emelie said on May 1st, 2010 at 12:56

OPI retails for around 21 USD here and there are not many shades that can make me justify to pay that price. I’d be okay with paying US retail price of 8-9 USD but not more. I understand that prices increase when import costs and tax is added, but come on – 170 % price increase? We’re not stupid. I’m still gonna get my OPIs online. However, it has to be a very special color that I can’t get anywhere else or I’ll stick with another brand.

sai said on May 1st, 2010 at 14:03

The price of an OPI polish is around 16USD in an authorized dealer in HK. There are some shops selling OPI with only 8USD which are not the authorized dealer. But it still much expensive to buy in HK :( i love to shop in Transdesign. I make an order once every month. It’s so sad that they are not selling OPI anymore.

Can anyone confirm that Transdesign are not shipping with small flatrate box anymore? Because I made an order around 20th April, at that time they still shipped with the small flatrate box. If they are not offering this shipping option I have to go back to eBay again=( but my friend told me there were lots of fake polish on eBay.

Maybe I should stick with china glaze and color club later on..hahahha

nikki said on May 1st, 2010 at 14:07

Hmmm…..I can see the problem here but I am in the UK and have never bought from overseas etailers…..I get my OPI from private and business ebay sellers and never pay retail…will this affect them I wonder??
It will not stop me buying OPI though, I will just keep hunting for the cheaper prices.

the-swatchaholic said on May 1st, 2010 at 14:13

sai I am very sorry but yes Transdesign is no longer shipping international orders with nail polishes with USPS. From now on they only ship international with UPS whichs costs are calculated by weight. For example for 19 polishes it would be around $120 just for shipping plus $40 for the shipping of hazardous goods. :(

Times are bad for international nail polish lovers.

sai said on May 1st, 2010 at 14:32

arhahhahahah thanks!

the-swatchaholic said on May 1st, 2010 at 14:40

So I love the option of online purchasing and if OPI is going to be that petty and frankly, not forward thinking and opportunity minded re eline business, then I will simply purchase other brands:). There are several that are equal to OPI yet don’t have the advertising budget. I’d rather put my money in the hands of the smaller businesses and help them grow:).

Sarah G said on May 1st, 2010 at 22:55

I won’t buy it anymore if I can’t get it online.

The retail price here in New Zealand is double what I pay online. I would pay retail if it were superior to other brands but in my opinion it isn’t – I have huge issues with it chipping on natural nails. I only buy it because it has the best colour selection. At the end of the day it’s only nail polish so it’s definitely something that I can cut out of my budget!

Sanna said on May 1st, 2010 at 23:31

Daphne said on May 2nd, 2010 at 10:58

OPI came to my country a couple of years back and i did not owe a single one until i started buying from etailers. Retail shops here are charging $23 (Singapore dollars) which is twice/thrice of what i can get online.
Im not the richest person around and even if i were, i dont think i can bring myself to knowingly get ripped off for a bottle of liquid which probably costs a buck to produce.

People here in my country are just getting ripped off for everything we purchase. From food to clothes. A top here is gonna cost you at least $40-$50 for high street brands.
I recently went shopping in NY and Spain and now i cant bring myself to buy anything from here. I do all my shopping online because everything’s cheaper. Even the biggest sale here cannot compare with whatever small time sales i can get at Macy’s in NY. If there’re any sales here, its from 10 – 40%, and its usually scrummy sections with oversized clothes. And even after discount, the clothes are just barely worth the money.
I went to Barcelona last year and after currency conversion, the Zara in my country still charges 50% more than what i saw in Spain.
It’s fucking ridiculous. I mean, dont kid us about shipping, big companies like Zara/OPI ought to ship cheaply since they’re shipped in bulk.

I feel that if a company ought to alter it’s prices according to the economy (if they are still making decent profit) so that people can comfortably buy a product without feeling a burn.
The thought of how many % the distributors to retailers are earning from exploiting OPI’s “exclusivity” makes me sick. They’re making like what 20 bucks per bottle?

I just feel so frustrated that online shopping is not an option now for OPI. But that doesnt mean im gonna go running to retail shops here.
Look OPI, if you dont make your products affordable, even people like me who love your polishes are just gonna find a cheaper alternative. Many people internationally are just gonna hop over to the next best product that’s worth our $.

To swatchaholic: i hope you can recommend other brands with good formulas to us! And hopefully with a good brush, hahaha.
My friends and i dont know much about other nail polish brands, i have a couple of China Glaze, but they dont distribute any other major nail polish brands apart from Sally Hansen and OPI here. Even then, the colour choices are really limited, so we’re looking for other brands that we can get online!

The Biche said on May 2nd, 2010 at 18:35

We face the same problem, OPI are ridiculously expensive and prices are marked up at least 150% at about USD14. I am going to recommend China Glaze or Orly to my friends from now on.

Thanks for always providing us with informative article.

StyxaT: I only can buy Zoya on ebay too because they are not available in Germany. :(

Other brand which I think have the same quality as OPI or even better are: China Glaze, Zoya (love their brush!! but its small which is good because my nails are not big), Misa, Orly, Color Club.
Of course with all these brands as an international customer you have the same problem: you have to buy them overseas.
I like some Essie nail polishes too but they retail for 13 EUR here which is way too much as well.

StyxaT,
I have bought Orly, Zoya, Nubar, NYX Girls, China Glaze, Essie and Revlon Streetwear from ebay sellers – and OPI too. Boozyshop in the Netherlands carries Diamond Cosmetics polishes, cheap and good quality. Overall Beauty carries BB Couture polishes. I want to check out some Models Own polishes – it’s a British brand and ships internationally. I got some Barielles at their UK shop because Barielle US doesn’t ship internationally. If I go to Germany I will definitely look for Essence and Catrice polishes. Yes, there are lots of options out there. Do some hunting – it will pay off.

ggs said on May 4th, 2010 at 07:10

Yes, OPI is a US-based company (North Hollywood CA), and the polishes sold here are made in the US. I could not find details on the manufacturing locations on their web site to see if they may also have overseas plants. For their policy on retail sales being restricted to salons, though you may want to go to OPI.COM —”About OPI” tab—”Diversion”. They are asking people to report any retail stores other than salons that sell OPI, as a matter of fact.

NP collectors that want to ask them to reconsider their policies not to allow ANY authorized sales over the internet, can write Suzi directly at the address on their site. She has a blog too!

Jennifer said on May 6th, 2010 at 16:14

OPI does not sell direct to Transdesign or any other etailer that is not a retail establishment. Ulta would be a retail establishment with a web presence so it’s not the same. If OPI is being sold in a retail outlet other than a salon it is being diverted by someone other than OPI. And that is why the cease and desist has been sent regarding the sale of OPI on Transdesign and on other etailer sites.

As much as you guys think that this sucks, it sucks for salons that retail OPI and can’t move it because the etailers are selling the polish for $5 a bottle and OPI is NOT distributing thier product directly to these etailers. Diversion has been a problem for many many years in the beauty industry. With the emergence of etailers the problem has taken a different turn. They are not able to chase down every asian beauty supply that sells OPI (and they do. Ya’ll can still pick it up there but not at Transdesign prices). Etailers are easier to find and thus an easier target to hit in terms of sending out cease and desists.

Polish Girl said on May 14th, 2010 at 18:04

Yes, but although there are sales tax tax and import duties/cost, that still doesn’t explain the _extreme_ price difference.

Jamie said on May 14th, 2010 at 19:03

Something that’s really disturbing me is that so few bloggers are posting about this. Is it because they are afraid of repercussions from OPI? I trust these bloggers to not slant reviews to favor manufacturers, but I’m beginning to wonder if they’re not opening the subject because it might be an unpopular move with the PR people who provide them with things to review.

I have several blogs that I check on a daily basis, and I really really love them, so I’m not wanting to rag on them. It’s just . . . this is a topic that affects a lot of us who buy the polish, and I want to hear others weigh in on it.

Casey said on May 15th, 2010 at 17:46

I didn’t even know this was going on, wow! I find that strange because I follow & read quite a few nail blogs.

It all makes sense now, though. I was browsing for some OPI’s because I only had a few in my collection, and couldn’t find them on head2toebeauty. I wound up ordering a ton from TD without knowing why they were getting rid of OPI.

I feel horrible for you that they’re so expensive! I order mine online as well, as I can’t justify spending even $9 for a bottle of polish. (I won’t even order the $8 Essie bottles from head2toe.) I know shipping can be brutal too, as I’ve ordered stuff from the UK before. :(

jellynat said on May 16th, 2010 at 16:37

I’ve never bought my OPI at etailers such as transdesign nor in Sephora where they’re sold here in France at crazy €€€€ prices. I buy them elsewhere, I’m a true alternative outsider. So the drama didn’t hit me.

In marketing term, they are making a dramatic and stupid error. You never win anything acting that way. In a zealous way. If they think I’ll give 16€ for a bottle, they dream with their eyes open… I’ve never, I’ll never. I’ll keep on posting the OPI I bought but don’t feel too bad because I’ve never bought that much of OPI polishes anyway. There are so many fishes in the ocean….

Polish Girl said on May 16th, 2010 at 23:44

I have definitely noticed the same as Jamie; several of the huge bloggers seems to have ignored the issue completely. Of course bloggers can chose to write about whatever they want, but this is a huge deal in the nail polish community right now, and it does strike me as slightly strange that some of the biggest bloggers haven’t written a single word about it..

Lily said on May 18th, 2010 at 00:52

What I don’t understand is why people say that OPI is shooting themselves in the foot. These etailers are NOT authorized sellers, which means none of that money went back to OPI, so by stopping sales from etailers, they are in fact ensuring that they get MORE sales, because there are people that like OPI enough to buy it at full price from somewhere like ULTA or Sephora, and not at an etailer who is in fact, selling the nail polishes ILLEGALLY.

ashley said on May 18th, 2010 at 01:06

I’m in the United States and I can still say that if I can’t purchase OPI from transdesign anymore than I will never again buy a bottle of OPI nailpolish.

the-swatchaholic said on May 18th, 2010 at 18:54

Thank you all for your comments! :)

Lily I don’t think OPI is losing any money with unauthorized etailers. The etailers must get their supply from someone and I don’t think that their stock “fell from a truck”. I rather think that these unauthorized etailers bought their stock from authorized sellers which bought them from OPI. So the etailers maybe just took a detour to get their OPI stock.
But this is all speculative.

I don’t buy OPI’s “we just want to ensure the quality so filed down numbers are the evil”-staginess. I can understand that they want to control the distribution but because I think their distribution and international pricing policy failed I don’t really care where I get my OPI fix from. I refuse to support their distribution and international pricing policy so I will continue to look if I can get my OPI fix for cheap and if I can’t I just stop buying OPI. I think they are not worth the $21 USD you have to pay here per bottle… I don’t even think they are worth full US retail.

I am really curious what happens to a bottle of OPI as soon as it crosses the US border. It magically evolves from a bottle of salon brand nail polish to a high end brand nail polish.. truly magical.

Yes I am still very bitter about this whole issue. ;) I want my flat rate box shipping back. :(

sara said on May 20th, 2010 at 11:14

Hi there! I am a on nail polish specialised online shop in Germany and asked the German distributor twice for being an official reseller. Original answer: he denied – they don’t want to be sold by a ‘just online seller’, because of their image. In fact the polishes are available online on every corner and I was telling him this. He claimed also the professional advice site – I am a professional, and I told him. Now I know why: he has HIMSELF an online-shop in Germany http://www.internetbeauty.de and sells each bottle for 16.00 € and fears competition. And a sentence to the professional thing – there is no explanation of the products, so what to say to this, hm??

I agree – OPI has a good quality, but not sooo good that it is 16.00 € worth!

I understand the thing with not official, but the whole battle against the e-tailers is ridiculous. Customers in our days are busy and have not the time to go from shop to shop to find nice colours, especially your US brands. The European brands are starting now to enhance their colours also to more uncommon shades and business is still growing, what I can see also on my numbers!

I think they are kicking their own asses from their seats…

Jamie said on May 31st, 2010 at 16:49

I read a post on another site that OPI is threatening to sue bloggers? That just seems totally weird — does anybody know anything about this?

Sandi said on June 1st, 2010 at 22:20

The elephant in the room that OPI is ignoring (and hoping you will too) is that discount chains like Target are also carrying OPI polishes with filed off serial numbers. But A) They don’t want to take on a giant like Target (or Amazon), and B) Target is charging $8.50 a bottle so they aren’t ‘discount’. I think that OPI is desperately afraid that they are losing their cachet as a ‘better’ polish and being sold by discount E-tailers contributes to that decline of image in their minds. With higher end polishes like RBL, Illamasqua, Lippmann’s becoming much more accessible and their contemporaries like BB Couture, Barielle and Zoya becoming more well known (in great part of course to nail bloggers), OPI is running scared of losing it’s niche. Too late, it already has.

As far as the silence of the major bloggers, I too find it extremely disappointing. I feel that at this point they’re sitting in silence not wanting to burn any bridges in case OPI backs off on this. But in the long run it will bite them as well because most of us will no longer bother to read OPI posts even if they are still receiving and swatching them. And OPI won’t back off, if they were that smart they wouldn’t have shot themselves in the foot like this in the first place. I said when the hooraw started to watch for OPI raising their prices which they promptly did and I think you’ll see another increase before the end of the year. OPI isn’t losing much business from me because I’ve never really liked their products anyway (out of my 150-200 polishes, only 2 are OPIs), too chippy on natural nails, but I think they’re going to take a huge hit on the foreign market and a fair sized one here at home. That’s OK, because they deserve it.

If I can’t buy OPI’s at discount prices anymore, I won’t buy them at all. I like some of the colors a lot, but not for 16,– € (more then 20,– US$), as they are here in Germany. OPI wants to be exclusive? Fine with me! One of the excluded is me, then :D . I can live with that, there are many fish in the sea…

And additional comment: have you seen that OPI threatened Temptalia with their lawyer because she posted the information about their Swiss Collection for Fall 2010?

Someone is losing it’s way definitely…

What? :O Uhm.. what? *speechless*
Thank you for the info, Vesna!

Yap! Here you can read her whole comment on it – http://www.temptalia.com/opi-swiss-collection-for-fall-2010 that’s just ridiculous!

OMG!! :o
Wow.. I am shocked.

Today I saw the new huge OPI counter at the Cologne Douglas. It is right where the NARS counter used to be before they left Germany.
I gave the counter the evil eye, Vesna! :D

This is ridiculous. Seriously, OPI?
Honestly, China Glaze is cheaper, and it lasts much longer on my nails than OPI EVER has.
Looks like OPI is’nt getting any more of MY hard-earned dollars.

And what can you do if you live in a country where OPI is not even for sale on stores? I live in Brazil, and it is extremely rare to find an OPI live at a store. The only way people buy it is from internet, because they don’t export here. This means that their customer’s number will for sure narrow internationally. I’d assume that’s bad business, isn’t it?
