Yves Saint Laurent – New Blacks / The Black Collection for Fall 2011 nail polishes: Swatches and Review

The Yves Saint Laurent New Blacks / The Black Collection was a collection I was looking forward to since I saw the first promo pics almost two months ago. In particular I was looking forward to the three nail polishes 126 Black Bronze (Noir Mordore), 127 Black Lapis (Noir Lapis) and 128 Black Indigo (Noir Indigo). When The Black Collection was released here a few weeks ago I just had to have them and purchased them in a heartbeat. All three nail polishes look divine in the bottle. The olive gold, blue and purple shimmer looks mesmerizing in their black base in the bottles and I was excited to see if they look as stunning on the nails and sadly they don’t. From the promo shoots where 126 Black Bronze, 127 Black Lapis and 128 Black Indigo are shown on the model you can already see that they are less shimmery on the nails but I didn’t expected them to be so much less shimmery.
Before I start my actual review let me just say that I still think all three The Black Collection nail polishes are pretty but I still expected more.

126 Black Bronze / Noir Mordore

126 Black Bronze (Noir Mordore) is my favorite of the YSL New Blacks nail polishes. It’s the most shimmery nail polish out of the New Blacks and I am already looking forward to wear it again.
127 Black Lapis / Noir Lapis

I needed two coats for an opaque look of 127 Black Lapis (Noir Lapis) which sadly is a bit of a letdown compared to the opacity of Black Bronze and Black Indigo. The blue and teal shimmer is gorgeous though.
128 Black Indigo / Noir Indigo

Hmm.. I adore purple and I had such high hopes for 128 Black Indigo (Noir Indigo), its stunning purple shimmer in the bottle and how it would transfer to my nails but sadly almost no shimmer shows up on the nails.

The YSL New Blacks / The Black Collection nail polishes contain 6 ml.

Well. I wish more of the breathtaking shimmer the bottles are promising would show up on the nails but it doesn’t. Unless you use a lot of high shine top coat and hold your nails directly under a strong light source like a halogen lamp the shimmer will be subtle – very subtle – and I usually don’t have a halogen lamp over my nails all day. With a high shine top coat the shimmer would have showed up a bit more but I wanted to show how the YSL The Black Collection nail polishes look on their own – without any help from a top coat.

While I really like 126 Black Bronze and also think that 127 Black Lapis is a pretty nail polish 128 Black Indigo was a disappointment. Almost no shimmer (compared to the bottle) showed up on the nail. I had high hopes in all of them to almost glisten on the nails which they sadly don’t. Usually I would write much more about the nail polishes directly under the pictures but I am kind of out of words to describe them. Maybe because I am disappointed. :(

Another point I am disappointed about is the quality of the brushes of this set. Two out of three brushes were defective. The brush in Black Bronze had a stray hair and the tip of the brush in Black Indigo was frayed. I expected much more from a 18 Euro nail polish especially if the size is so small with only 6 ml of nail polish.
All but 127 Black Lapis were one coaters and all applied easily. The formula of the The Black Collection nail polishes is great though and they easily applied smooth and evenly.

Are you tempted to pick up anything from the Yves Saint Laurent The Black Collection?

  1. The Black Bronze looks like Butter London’s Wallis in the bottle…not on the nail though. I LIKE the look on the nail, but I’d be disappointed if I’d paid for that bottle. Wallis…looks on the nail like it does in the bottle. Stunning.

  2. I like how they look on the nail with the exception that they’re not shiny enough for me w/o a top coat, but when you’re paying that much money for nail polish it should look how the bottle suggests. Not everyone is smart enough to check your site for the true look of the polish. :)

    • Yes they still do look nice Nicole. :) You can make them look much better with a top coat but I agree when you pay so much for a nail polish it shouldn’t even be necessary. From a high end brand I expect high end performance.
