Zoya – MatteVelvet Winter 2009: Swatches and Review

I know I am a little late to the MatteVelvet Winter party but I thought quite a long time about purchasing this collection. The matte hype was huge but I don’t want to buy nail polishes just because they are matte. For me (and my wallet) it made more sense to buy a matte top coat to add a matte finish to the nail polishes I already own.

What made me buy them eventually was how they look with a shiny top coat. I couldn’t get the pictures how these three nail polishes look with a shiny top coat out of my head.. and so I cracked and purchased them. 😀

For all three nail polishes I used two coats.

Harlow

Harlow is a magenta/mauve with a hint of purple and the most shimmer or the largest shimmer of the three nail polishes. It is my favorite without a shiny top coat from this collection.

Savita

Blue toned purple with pink shimmer. I love purple.. I adore purple! This was actually the one I was lemming the most from the Winter mattes but.. the finish is too flat for me to like it with without a shiny top coat. I wouldn’t wear this on its own. The color is stunning though and I don’t have any purple in my collection that is even close to this one.

Veruschka

A green between forest green and emerald green with lighter green shimmer. It was number two on my lemming list but even though the color is gorgeous I wouldn’t wear it on its own.

But now.. on to the fun and exciting part.. the swatches with a high shine top coat! I added one coat of Seche Vite on all of them and the result was mind-blowing! I can’t compare the shimmer from these nail polishes with a top coat to any other of my nail polishes. They are breathtaking.

I am glad that I caved and finally bought this collection. If you don’t like mattes or are tired of the matte hype don’t just ignore these nail polishes because they are matte. Their unique shimmer and especially the unique color of Savita are worth a try. :)

  1. i have all three of these matte colors! although i LOVE purple, harlow is my fave of the three! I think the green looks stunning just as matte itself! the other two look gorgeous with the top coat!! ahhh, cant wait to change up my nails again. LOL thanks for the awesome swatches!

  2. I love them all! I agree that it’s better to buy a matte topcoat than getting matte polishes, but these look great with a shiny topcoat as well. :)

  3. Zoya has a lot of gorgeous nail polishes, dramaqueensmum! I especially love their brush.

Yes, ReaderRita, the shimmer of matte nail polishes with a shiny top coat is unique! I bought OPI’s Suzy Skis In The Pyrenees Suede just because of how it looks with a shiny top coat, too. :)

Awesome pix! I just got Veruschka as part of Zoya’s Green Friday promo, and I put it on right over the color I was already wearing, with the UPS box still in my hand! It is gorgeous- and now I know that the shiny topcoat will further rock it! I used to think that I would never buy a matte or suede polish, that I’d just be content with a matte topcoat over regular polish, but the mattes and suedes are actually SO different from their shiny counterparts- I caved. Just got OPI Russian Navy Suede specifically to wear it with a shiny topcoat! It is SO much different than plain old shiny Russian Navy- more deeply sparkled, I think.
Kind of like a language translator program- you put in a word, translate it to the second language, then translate that word back again, and it shows a different definition! A whole new world!

  5. You’re very welcome Brooke! :)

As far as I know there is only one Harlow. Or do you mean Harley? Harley is a light gray with shimmer. It is from the Zoya Twist collection for Spring 2009.

  6. Gorgeous!! Thanks for posting pictures of all of these. I have Veruschka and love it. Savita and Harlow are beautiful!

by the way, are there two Harlows or am I imagining things? I thought Harlow was grey?
